Give "Pocahontas" Back to Indigenous People

Give "Pocahontas" Back to Indigenous People
The Issue
Starting this petition as an Indigenous person who has been to the Disney parks several times and has consumed Disney's media for many years. While likewise individuals are voting to ban "Pocahontas" on Disney +, I don't believe that this should be the case. I believe that Disney should no longer be able to monetize Pocahontas for profit. Disney should no longer be allowed to profit off the merch sales and image of the character, due to the historical inaccuracies, harmful misrepresentation, and disregard for the intergenerational trauma of Indigenous families.
Disney makes money off of a fictional version of the first Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women's case. By romanticizing colonization and erasing the true story of Matoaka, they are profiting off the suffering of Indigenous people.
Disney currently sells dolls, costumes, shirts and the DVD of Pocahontas even though they know the systemic issues they have caused due to this movie.

Their fetishization of Indigenous culture has led to even more cases of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW). The amount of money that Disney has made by using "Pocahontas"'s likeness could have gone towards Indigenous communities struggling with issues like land theft and water rights violations. The Disney company chooses to continue with their cultural appropriation. The use of dreamcatchers and traditional clothing for their own profit is disgraceful when these are used for important ceremonies and cultural practices.
We, the people who sign this petition, demand Disney, acknowledge the importance of authentic indigenous representation.
- Disney should pull all DVDs/Blu-Ray/other entertainment with the character of Pocahontas so they can no longer profit off our struggle.
- Disney should pull all merch of Pocahontas off their shelves, books, clothes, dolls, toys, and other characters within the Pocahontas movie, (Meeko, Flick, and Percy).
- Disney should pull all reference of Pocahontas out of their respective theme parks. (Disneyland Paris recently renamed the Frontierland Playground after years of calling it "Pocahontas Indian Village", so I know they can easily make these changes) (Same with Splash Mountain, that has been rethemed to Tiana's Bayou Adventure after the backlash of "Song of the South".)
- Additionally, Disney lets non-Indigenous people play the character of Pocahontas as long as they look the part. There is so much wrong with this in addition to having the character in the parks (even with the character's new outfit as of 2016)
The question remains why won't Disney listen to Indigenous people about Pocahontas, even if they continue to put out Indigenous content with Indigenous creators like "Echo" and "What If"'s "Kahhori". When Indigenous creators are given the opportunity to tell their own stories, it benefits the community in a way that is ethically alright to commercialize like Moana. However, Pocahontas has been a character Disney has used for way too long to profit off Indigenous suffering and it must stop.
