Give Pepé Le Pew and Penelope Pussycat Major Presence Again

The Issue

In March 2021, Warner Bros. decided to basically shelve any use of Pepé Le Pew indefinitely. Two years have passed, and his fate remains uncertain whether Warner Bros. decided to officially ban and retire the character behind closed doors.

He was digitally removed from an alternate version of a short that’s already watchable. When he was brought back in Animaniacs, he was erased which might have marked his final appearance in any Looney Tunes media. Looney Tunes Cartoons included his name on a tombstone which is a disturbing reminder how Warner Bros. wanted the character to be gone for good.

Years have passed, and even his co-star Penelope Pussycat, an underutilized Looney Tunes female character often sidelined in favor of Lola Bunny (the token female) hasn’t been used in years.

November 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of Chuck Jones’ Oscar winning short “For Scent-imental Reasons”, and January 2025 marks the 80th birthday of Pepé Le Pew when he made his on screen debut. And to not acknowledge him is like pretending he doesn’t exist.

If Chuck Jones was alive today, he would be disappointed by these devastating headlines. The best thing Warner Bros. should do is to completely revamp the character and give him a new purpose in future cartoons. But the same universal value of pursuing a life long goal should remain. The best option is to make Pepé as well as Penelope job seekers and whatever they get into has potential for some slapstick comedy.

Please consider this, and maybe give Penelope a speaking role. The two working as a fully established couple. Polar opposites in love that make the most of any situation. Once again, reconsider making Pepé Le Pew and Penelope Pussycat useful to the Looney Tunes franchise. Sidelining and possibly banning him was an absence of thought made to appeal to the masses who don’t understand mindless comedy.
