The Issue

In 2023, Netflix released Nimona, a beautiful, groundbreaking achievement in feature animation that went through a long, troubled production history that's just as compelling as the film itself. The film, based on the graphic novel by Nate Stevenson, was originally in the works at Blue Sky Studios, but was suddenly sent into limbo upon the studio's closure by Disney in 2021. The cancellation was met with sadness and anger, in no small part owing to the film's promise of groundbreaking LGBTQ+ representation and an innovative art style.

But the filmmakers refused to back down, and after a year of behind-the-scenes negotiations, the film found a new home at DNEG Animation and Annapurna Pictures, and was finally released on Netflix in 2023 to overwhelming acclaim. It's a true miracle of a movie, a phoenix that rose from the ashes and soared.

The film's journey doesn't end there, though. Being a Netflix release, a physical home media release of the film has consequently been left in question to the general public. As the streaming bubble continues to burst in real time and the physical media market continues to defiantly show a pulse, despite many studios' shortsighted beliefs that it's not worth investing in, not to mention the onset of the horrifying practice of companies removing streaming-exclusive releases (or even cancelling nearly finished unreleased projects) for tax writedown or writeoff purposes, it's never been more urgent than now to demand that a film as special as Nimona be given the physical home media release that it rightfully deserves.
