So we had a meeting on 29th January 2021 with Barron River MP Craig Crawford and his electorate officer Susan Lear. Copies of comments and list of signatures were handed over.
We discussed all the reasons why we believe Kuranda and Cairns could benefit from having use of the rail line affordably for locals. A lot was said but this is what was agreed upon.
Craig said that using the Kuranda Scenic Rail may be out of the question as it is primarily for Tourist use, he suggested that we could do a feasibility study and viability of local use, how many return trips, times, prices and generated income etc.
Our response was that feasibility studies are expensive and take time and that we should just do a trial...to this Craig suggested and committed to finding out whether the ‘Savannah Lander’ currently sitting in storage, is a possibility for use. Craig asked us what times for routes would be ideal...we said a 6.30am from Cairns/return and a 5.30pm from Cairns/ return to start, with possibly a night train - let us know your thoughts.
Current trade in Kuranda was discussed and how the train would benefit shop opening times, workers access to transport and the tourist experience in general. (if they could travel later, stay etc)
We discussed the need for young people to have access to Cairns facilities and autonomy to participate as well as the impact current lack of facilities has on crime and pressure on the family and community.
It was a full discussion, the wildlife, safety on the range and uncertainty with the bridge - we think we got our point across, and know that we relayed the urgency of this, so we hope change does take place and that it does not take too long...
Craig will relay our discussion with QLD TMR on 5th February 2021 with the hope of gaining support, and get back to us.
Thankyou for your support!
