Give Iowa’s Wildlife a Second Chance: Support Ambassador Animals

The Issue

I am a licensed wildlife rehabilitator in Iowa working to get a bill sponsored that would allow licensed rehabilitators to keep non-releasable wildlife as permanent ambassador animals instead of being forced to euthanize animals that could live healthy, humane lives under professional care.

Right now, when an animal cannot be safely released back into the wild due to permanent injury or imprinting, euthanasia is often the only legal option — even when the animal is otherwise healthy and could thrive in a regulated, professional environment. This bill would create a safe, responsible pathway for those animals to remain in licensed care.

These animals would serve as ambassadors, helping the public better understand Iowa’s native wildlife, conservation, and responsible coexistence with animals. Seeing these animals in person creates lasting impact and encourages respect for nature and habitat protection.

Public safety and animal welfare would remain top priorities. This proposal applies only to licensed wildlife rehabilitators and would include safeguards such as:

• Veterinary approval

• Secure housing standards

• DNR oversight

• No unregulated public contact

This is NOT about turning wildlife into pets. It is about reducing unnecessary euthanasia while strengthening conservation education and accountability.

By signing this petition, you are showing Iowa legislators that:

✔ You support responsible wildlife care

✔ You value conservation and education

✔ You believe healthy animals deserve a second chance

Your voice matters. Public support helps demonstrate that this issue matters to Iowans and encourages lawmakers to take it seriously.

Together we can make a difference for Iowa’s wildlife.

Please sign this petition and help us bring about positive change for Iowa's wildlife community.
