The issue

My name is Alex and for the past few years, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact of the Family Support Program from Second Chances Inc here in Adelaide, South Australia.

This initiative has been a lifeline for children of incarcerated parents, offering them the guidance, support, and resources desperately needed to navigate life's challenges. Pulling funding from such a vital program threatens the stability and future of countless young lives that depend on its support.

Second Chances has been funded by the Department for Human Services for 10 ye a rs to look after the kids no one else will. All until 31 December 2026 when it will cease funding with the SA Government atating "budget constraints ". They saved $300,000.00 but just lost 147 kids to the streets.

Every child deserves a fair shot at succeeding, irrespective of the missteps of their parents. Statistics show that children of prisoners face a significantly higher risk of falling into cycles of poverty, poor educational outcomes, and even incarceration themselves.

According to a study conducted by the National Resource Center on Children and Families of the Incarcerated, these children are six times more likely to find themselves imprisoned at some point in their lives compared to their peers. Programs like Second Chances Inc provide crucial mentorship and intervention that can break this cycle, carving out a path of hope and opportunity.

Unfortunately, due to recent budget reallocations, essential funding for the Family Support Program has been diverted. This decision has already led to a reduction in services, and it endangers the existence of a program that hundreds of families rely upon each year. Without this support, children who are already vulnerable are at risk of falling through the cracks during pivotal moments in their development.

I call upon the Government of South Australia and local government officials to restore this critical funding. By reinstating financial backing, we can ensure that Second Chances Inc continues to offer tutoring, counseling, and community-building activities that empower youth to strive for their dreams despite adversities.

Investing in these children is investing in a brighter future for our community. We must act to reaffirm our commitment to supporting marginalized families and providing opportunities for all. I urge you to recognize the urgent need to restore funding to the Family Support Program.

Please join me in making a difference. Sign this petition and help us secure a brighter future for these children, giving them the second chance they truly deserve.
