Give Fairfield’s Kids a Safe Place to Ride — Before More Lives Are Lost

Give Fairfield’s Kids a Safe Place to Ride — Before More Lives Are Lost
The issue
Lack of free/low cost recreational space for teens and their bikes..
Two local teenagers have already lost their lives. How many more before we act?
We are calling on Fairfield City Council and the NSW Government to establish safe, free, and accessible recreational riding spaces for children and teenagers within the Fairfield LGA.
Currently, there is a significant lack of designated areas where young people can legally and safely ride bikes, e-bikes, scooters, e-scooters, and trail/dirt motorbikes. As a result, many are forced onto public roads, footpaths, and unsafe environments.
Tragically, this gap has already had devastating consequences. A recent fatal incident involving two local teenagers highlights the urgent need for action. Without safe alternatives, young people will continue to take risks—not out of recklessness, but because they have nowhere else to go.
While our community has seen investment in housing developments, playgrounds, and passive parklands, there remains a critical missing piece: active recreational infrastructure for older kids and teens.
This petition calls for:
Dedicated riding parks or zones within Fairfield LGA
Free or low-cost access for all families
Safe, purpose-built tracks for various riding types
Extended or flexible opening hours
1. Prevents Tragedy & Improves Safety
Providing legal riding spaces reduces the likelihood of young people using roads and public spaces in dangerous ways. Safe environments mean fewer accidents, injuries, and fatalities.
2. Supports Youth Engagement & Wellbeing
Not all young people connect with traditional sports. Riding offers an alternative that promotes physical activity, mental wellbeing, and a sense of freedom in a controlled environment.
3. Reduces Anti-Social Behaviour Complaints
Designated riding areas help minimise complaints about noise, illegal riding, and property damage in residential streets and parks.
4. Promotes Equity & Accessibility
Current riding options often require paid memberships or travel outside the area, creating barriers for many families. Free local spaces ensure all kids—regardless of income—have access.
5. Strengthens Community Connection
Shared recreational spaces bring families and young people together, creating a stronger, more inclusive local community.
6. Future-Proofs a Growing Community
Fairfield is expanding rapidly. Planning for youth recreation now ensures infrastructure keeps pace with population growth and evolving recreational trends.
Every child deserves a safe place to play, ride, and grow. Right now, too many young people in Fairfield LGA are being left without options—putting their safety at risk.
By investing in dedicated recreational riding spaces, we can save lives, support families, and build a safer, stronger community.
