Give creators more freedom over Parodies and Fandom.

Give creators more freedom over Parodies and Fandom.
The Issue
I want to express my frustration with how intellectual property (IP) enforcement has evolved, especially regarding creators of parodies, fan games, and adult projects. In the past, there was a mutual understanding: companies owned their IPs but didn't aggressively target small creators who were just expressing their creativity.
Nowadays, it feels like some companies have taken this too far, investing considerable time and money in legal actions against these creators. While it’s clear that companies hold the rights to their IPs, this relentless pursuit of parodies and fan work stifles creativity and undermines the very spirit of innovation that drives our cultural and creative growth.
I get that companies want to protect their brands, particularly those associated with children. However, the existence of adult projects doesn't tarnish a well-established brand. The market differentiates between these segments, and such projects seldom affect the overall brand identity.
It's important to recognize that parodies and fan projects are often a tribute to how cherished these IPs are. Fans create out of passion and respect, not malice. By suppressing these works, companies not only lose creative extensions of their IPs but also risk alienating a significant part of their most devoted fan base.
I urge entertainment companies to rethink their approach and adopt a more balanced strategy that embraces fan creativity instead of stifling it. Allow creators to explore and engage with these intellectual properties. This would not only cultivate goodwill among fans but could also lead to unexpected collaborations and innovations.
Let’s encourage companies to ease their aggressive legal tactics against creators and create an environment where creativity can thrive without fear of unwarranted legal consequences. Sign this petition to support creators and advocate for a more open and inclusive future in entertainment.
Please add your name to this petition if you believe in protecting creative freedom and supporting small creators everywhere.
