Give Babies Privacy, Place Changing Tables in a Stall
The Issue
As a parent of two young babies, I've found myself in numerous uncomfortable situations while trying to change my children's diapers in public restrooms. More times than I can count, I've had to change them right in front of the restroom door or in narrow passageways, where my babies' private parts are on full display. Fellow restroom users often glance over my shoulder, and it feels not only invasive but disrespectful to my children's right to privacy.
I have heard many stories of fellow parents who have faced judgement on circumcision, unsolicited advice on rashes, wiping, diaper brands, or uncomfortable remarks about their baby's appearance while splayed out on a table mid-daiper change.
This is not just a personal inconvenience; it's an issue of respect and dignity for all families. Babies, like adults, deserve privacy. Current restroom designs often place baby changing tables in open in direct view of the doorway, or next to hand dryers and towel dispensers, which are all highly visible areas. This is inappropriate and thoughtless.
We live in a world where personal privacy is valued, yet the youngest of our generation are routinely denied this basic right. There are laws to mandate how tall a table must be to insure accessibility for wheel-chair users, and there are laws requiring men's restroms to also have a charging table, but that is as far as consideration for babies has gone.
Situating baby changing tables within private stalls would not only provide the necessary space for caregivers but also protect our children's privacy.
Let's make it mandatory for all public facilities with restrooms to install baby changing tables within private stalls. This change is both feasible and vital for the dignity and respect of both parents and children. It's time to rethink restroom design and provide a safe, private environment for all.
I'm urging city planners, business owners, and regulatory bodies to recognize the importance of this issue and take concrete steps towards changing the current layout of public restroom facilities. Let's create a future where all babies can be changed in a private and respectful manner.
Sign this petition to show your support for granting babies the privacy they deserve during these intimate moments. Together, we can push for this change and make a difference for parents and children in every community.
Here is all research I have found of any changing-table related regulations.
