Stop Evictions in RI
Stop Evictions in RI
UPDATE: Due to our great success on this platform, we are now compiling an official list of petition signatures to be presented to Governor Raimondo! Please fill out the form at https://tinyurl.com/PetitionNoEvictionsRI and share widely!
When the COVID-19 crisis began, RI Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Suttell ordered the courts to close for most cases, including eviction proceedings. Evictions are now postponed for Covid-19 related situations only until July 1st. However, for those who already had pending evictions filed, the courts will be processing this backlog of hundreds of cases starting June 1st!
This is cruel, dangerous, and unacceptable. Evictions are always inhumane, but especially so during a global public health crisis. Putting families on the street, in shelters, or forced to move into crowded living spaces with friends and family will only spread this virus, and make the lives of those already struggling even more difficult.
We are calling on Governor Gina Raimondo to issue an executive order that will institute a complete eviction moratorium, as well as cancel all rents and mortgages, including for small businesses, and forgive all payments due during the time of the state of emergency and for 120 days after it is lifted.
Additionally, we urge the RI General Assembly to take up a comprehensive bill that replicates the language proposed in H.R. 6515 “Emergency Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act of 2020” as introduced by Representative Ilhan Omar. Provisions of this bill include:
- No evictions for nonpayment of rents and mortgages
- A prohibition on fines and fees for nonpayment
- No accrual of debt for past nonpayment, forgiving any rent payments due during the declared state of emergency
- A Relief Fund to assist landlords and to reimburse any payments made during the state of emergency
We are in a precarious situation as we enter a phased reopening while continuing to deal with the effects brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. Rhode Islanders need now more than ever to be housed in order to maintain their health and security.
