With the decision to start the school year socially distanced, comes the unfavorable opinions of many citizens in the town of Cumberland. Me as a senior at Cumberland High School has experienced the process of social distancing and I, (like many other) believe the process completely negates the idea of education. Social distanced learning creates a burden for students when it comes to focus, distractions, mental health, social skills and many other possibilities. While on google meet, I personally remember the awkward silence in the call which never happened in person. When you’re learning in person, you must be there and follow along, although, with social distanced learning comes the option to actually follow what is occurring in that time frame. Not to mention that every single student will have a new teacher which will only make communication worse in regards to learning. The in-person learning versus social distanced learning are two completely different options to educate the youth which is an issue we have in today’s society; but what comes with two completely different options comes the right choice. I respect the idea of wanting to rather be “safe than sorry” but safety can also be practiced in person.
