Gyms & Fitness in RI must be Declared an ESSENTIAL BUSINESS

The Issue

We must fight this pandemic with data and facts, and the data shows that gyms and fitness centers are not a super spreader of COVID cases AND the fact a healthy body and mind is a strong combatant to the virus. They must be deemed an essential business! Therefore we request to be opened on 12/21/20 as planned.

Here are some key facts we gathered:

  • Public Records request from RI Dept. of Health stated that the total number of COVID-19 cases traced to gym and fitness centers in RI were only 44 (from 6/1/20-8/16/20) out of the tens of thousands of visits
  • The RI Dept. of Health has stated "exercise as an essential activity"
  • Via Science Magazine, people with obesity who contracted COVID-19 were 113% more likely than people of healthy weight to land in the hospital, 74% more likely to be admitted to an ICU, and 48% more likely to die

The small business owners and sole proprietors are steadfast in following the rules to ensure the safety of their customers and the community. They even pledge to have cameras in their business to help the State monitor the rule following!

The community going to the gyms, studios, fitness centers, and more are begging for them to be opened back up. It has been a lifesaver for them for not only their physical health, but also their mental well-being.

It makes no sense to close down a business that promotes health during a health crisis! Future shutdowns shall not include gyms as they are essential to our health. Save us, and our community.
