Getting girls flag football into New Mexico high schools
The Issue
Flag football is a fast-growing sport in the U.S., and it’s not just an engaging activity; it’s a solid stepping stone to scholarships and college opportunities. Schools in states like Florida, California, and Nevada already have thriving flag football programs which help student-athletes excel both academically and athletically. The time is now for New Mexico to join these states and offer our girls the same opportunities.
By introducing girls flag football to New Mexico high schools through the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA), we can open doors for young women that will allow them to showcase their talent, learn valuable life skills, and earn scholarships that make college education more accessible. According to a report by the Women’s Sports Foundation, girls who participate in sports are more likely to graduate and are three times more likely to earn academic scholarships. Imagine the impact this can have when extended to a generation of young women in New Mexico!
We can work with the NMAA to designate flag football as an official sport for girls. The next step lies in helping schools to develop teams by providing necessary training for coaches and investing in basic infrastructure. Additionally, state and local sports leagues can help support school programs through annual competitions that highlight girls' flag football, drawing attention to their skills and dedication.
Please join me in urging the New Mexico Activities Association to make girls flag football accessible in all high schools across the state. By signing this petition, we can ignite change and create pathways for young women eager to pursue their sports dreams and academic goals.
