The Issue

The University of Vermont (UVM) has long been a leader in sustainability and environmental awareness. UVM prides itself on its green initiatives and its role as a model for sustainable practices in higher education.

Vermont is known for its commitment to the environment, and one significant aspect of this is the state's redemption program for beverage containers. Under the Bottle Bill, consumers pay a deposit at the time of purchase and receive their deposit back when they return the empty container for recycling. This system significantly reduces litter and encourages recycling, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

Despite Vermont's strong recycling culture, UVM does not currently offer a campus-wide program to collect redeemable bottles. This is a missed opportunity for the university to further demonstrate its environmental leadership and commitment to sustainability. Implementing a bottle redemption system on campus would not only promote waste reduction but also encourage students, faculty, and staff to actively participate in recycling efforts.

UVM has the opportunity to set a precedent among educational institutions by incorporating redeemable bottle collection as a standard practice. Universities around the country are adopting similar initiatives, reaping the benefits of increased recycling rates and the reduction of campus waste. As members of the UVM community, it's crucial to advocate for systems that align with our shared values of sustainability. Let's urge the university administration to establish a program that collects redeemable bottles and cans, ensuring that UVM takes full advantage of Vermont's Bottle Bill.

Sign this petition to encourage the University of Vermont to implement a redeemable bottle collection program and contribute to a healthier planet for future generations.
