The Issue

As a student at Venice, I strongly believe that every student deserves to feel safe within our school environment, regardless of their immigration status or that of their family. One of the crucial steps in achieving this level of safety and reassurance is the approval of the teacher-endorsed plan for when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) potentially comes onto campus. By having a clear and structured plan, both parents and students can be reassured that in the event of ICE presence, the school has proactive measures in place to protect all individuals.

Furthermore, it is essential that teachers, especially those new to our school, understand what actions they should take in such scenarios through in-depth sensitivity training. This plan would provide guidance and training to ensure teachers can act confidently and knowledgeably, thus maintaining a secure learning environment during potential disruptions.

In addition to implementing this plan, I propose the introduction of mandatory "Know Your Rights" assemblies. These assemblies serve as educational platforms to teach students about their rights under the U.S. Constitution. Such knowledge is invaluable and aligns with our schoolwide learner goals of nurturing visionary thinkers, effective communicators, and inquisitive minds. By having a mandatory assembly, we can ensure that those who need it the most are able to access it, as well as educating all students on this important topic that could save others in a dire situation.

In addition to the approved ICE response plan and mandatory "Know Your Rights" assemblies, students also want a dream center, and to be notified when ICE is spotted within at least five miles of the school.

I urge you to join me in calling for the approval of the ICE response plan, implementing "Know Your Rights" assemblies, and the other request we want for Venice High School. Together, we can create an environment of safety, understanding, and empowerment. Please sign this petition to show your support and help us achieve this essential goal for our Venice community.
