Neighbors of Holland Township,

I'm asking you to take a moment and think about the direction our community is heading.

Like many of you, I moved to and stayed in Holland Township because it's a good place to live. It's a community where people know their neighbors, where families feel safe, and where common sense still matters. That's why I'm concerned about the growing use of AI-powered surveillance cameras in our township.

We're being told these cameras are for safety, but every camera added means more data collected, more tracking, and less privacy for ordinary people who have done nothing wrong. Today, these systems may be used to identify stolen vehicles or assist investigations. Tomorrow, what will they be used for? Once surveillance infrastructure is installed, it rarely gets reduced—it usually expands.

Many residents are not comfortable with the idea of our movements being recorded and stored every time we drive through town. We should not have to sacrifice our privacy just to live in a safe community. Safety and freedom should go hand in hand.

There is also the question of cost. These systems can cost taxpayers thousands of dollars per camera, along with ongoing fees for software, maintenance, and data storage. Before spending more public money, residents deserve clear answers about whether these systems are truly necessary and whether they are worth the long-term cost.

This isn't about being against law enforcement or public safety. It's about protecting the rights and freedoms of everyday citizens. It's about making sure Holland Township remains a place where people are trusted, not constantly monitored.

I believe we should have a public conversation before more surveillance technology is added to our community. The people who live here deserve a voice in decisions that affect their privacy and their tax dollars.
