From Jessica Price, Poinsettia Park resident:
Hi friends,
Many of you know I strongly oppose the placement of the new dog park at Poinsettia Park. My kids LOVE playing in the bowl and it is a HUGE area that will no longer be green but will be fenced with wood chips. I also feel it is a safety concern to have the dog park next to the playground. Dogs often get rambunctious when around other dogs and this is not a good situation when kids are around. The city has steam rolled past our protests but we may have one last shot at convincing them to at least move the dog park to another place.
We are planning a giant play date at the grassy bowl on Thursday, June 8th after school (1:45pm). Please please join us if you can! We will make some signs, I'll do some interviews, bring snacks, bring your dogs if you want - we want to show we love dogs AND kids and want to find a better solution. Wear RED WHITE AND/OR BLUE to show your support! It's a great way to get our kids involved in the political process and showing them THEY have a voice too. I am putting together a slideshow to present to the city.
Also, the city wants to make the open lot next to the basketball courts a "multi-generational center." We just don't have the available parking to support this and I haven't heard one person I've talked to say they want this. I've been thinking we don't have enough parks in Carlsbad. This empty lot would be a great solution for the dog park if they still want to go ahead with putting one at Poinsettia Park. Instead of trying to shove everything into Poinsettia Park, we want to urge the city to build a new park. We don't have a park with a playground or dog park overlooking the ocean like other cities have. Wouldn't it be awesome if we did!? I don't know how you feel about this but I've talked to many people who would LOVE a park like that. We LOVE Carlsbad and feel like a park on the beach would be the perfect way to enjoy life here in Carlsbad.
If you have any photos of the grassy bowl, please submit them to me: jessicalangprice@gmail.com , post them here or text them to me 801-719-0028. My 3rd grader Kelsey is passionate about keeping the grassy bowl and is putting together a slide show. I have many pictures as I try to take at least one a week to show different groups enjoying the grassy bowl.
If you can't make it but still want to tell the city council members how you feel (only they can turnover the decision for the placement of the dog park), please email or CALL or attend the city council meeting on June 12th at 6pm at 1200 Carlsbad Village Dr. :
