Get Skye Out!

Get Skye Out!

The Issue

An 18-year-old student at Harlan named Skye (Kevin) has harassed and assaulted multiple girls (including minors) and has lifted up their skirts and taken pictures. Many of the girls have reported him to administration, but nothing is being done. Students started attacking him and admin sent him home because it was unsafe for him, not because of the cases of sexual assault. On May 17th, a group of students organized a protest to bring awareness and convince the school to expel Skye and for legal actions to be taken. At first the protest started in a field near the school's bus ramp, but then we were forced to move onto the courtyard by the school police. One of the police officers (Officer Avery) tried to stop the protest and I (Kiara Genao) stayed to continue protesting. She told me to go to the office and I refused because I wasn't breaking any laws and using my right to freedom of speech. She said, "Do you even know what sexual assault is?" I responded with "Yes! I've been raped before!" She then responded with "What do you want me to do about it?" and insisted that removing him from the school would achieve nothing. Then an administrator came up to me and told me to go to the office because I was "causing a riot" when in reality I was just exhibiting my right to peaceful protest. The admin refuses to do anything about this situation and has suspended multiple students because they spoke up about it. Sexual assault is a very serious issue and should not be tolerated no matter what the circumstances are, especially when minors are being hurt.
