Get Rid of Mandatory Zearns

The Issue

For many students, like myself, the introduction of Zearn into our curriculum has not been a pleasant experience. It is difficult, not engaging, and frankly, it reduces the enjoyment of learning in our classes. Nobody in the class, that I know of, enjoys doing Zearns. It has become a source of frustration rather than a tool for learning.

Zearn was designed to enhance our learning experience, but for many students, it has had the opposite effect. Instead of assisting our education, it has become a tedious task that takes away from valuable learning time. Traditional methods of teaching and interactive, hands-on learning have proven to be more effective and enjoyable for us. Yet, they are being overshadowed by mandatory Zearn lessons.

According to various educational experts, interactive and peer-based learning techniques enhance student understanding and retention, far more than computer-based algorithms can. Statistically, students who engage in active learning environments achieve higher scores than those who learn through passive formats such as Zearn.

Although I am completely cognizant that Zearns match up with our curriculum, or help us in further understanding the topic, so they say, but the children, who have to do 3 or 4 of these a week, do not enjoy them.

This situation requires immediate attention. By continuing to use platforms like Zearn, we are ignoring the proven benefits of traditional and interactive teaching methods.  Our education system should listen more to  student interests and needs, rather than what will make us "more intelligent".

We urge teachers and other teaching authorities to reconsider the mandatory use of Zearn in our classrooms. Why let us get more engrossed into fake technology that we don't enjoy, while we could be learning with methods we like!

I have some actual evidence from students who disliked Zearns:

-LJ Said: "Zearn sucks. It teaches differently from all [of] the teachers. And its like 5-10 something minute videos. Then the Power of tower, which God forbid I make a mistake. No, I don't need help!! [Then it] goes ahead and starts you over."

-Colton Said: "Zearn literally just takes up our time that we could be using to do other things."

-Anna Said: "I don't like Zearn because its boring and difficult, and we should be doing other things. Also, it takes up precious time we could use for other events."
