How many times have you almost been hit by a cyclist riding on the footpath in inner Sydney?

Or been told to move because you're blocking a cyclist's way as you walk on the footpath?

Ever been abused or told to F*** Off when you ask cyclists to use the bike lanes or roads, or felt threatened or unsafe when you challenge a cyclist to get off the footpath?

It is illegal to cycle on a footpath in NSW, yet NSW Police choose not to enforce the law on this point.  This petition is asking the NSW Police Minister to order NSW police to assign some resources to inner Sydney suburbs at peak times to fine cyclists who are breaking the law.

Inner Sydney, with its vibrant and bustling communities, offers excellent infrastructure for all residents, including designated bike paths that keep cyclists safe and away from pedestrians. Yet, many choose the convenience of riding on footpaths, endangering others and violating the law.  

The dangers posed by cyclists on footpaths are real.  Hundreds of pedestrian injuries were reported in 2025 including two pedestrians deaths as a result of being hit by e-bikes,  yet this illegal activity remains unpoliced.  Whether it be elderly individuals, children and families with prams, or people with disabilities, pedestrians are at risk of serious harm. 

To address this pressing issue, we demand that the Police Minister change current policy and direct NSW police to monitor streets in inner city Sydney and impose on the spot fines for cyclists breaking the law by riding on footpaths.  By enforcing existing laws more rigorously and increasing penalties, we can ensure our footpaths are safe for everyone.   We've spent millions building bike lanes - lets force cyclists to use them.
