The Issue
Petition for a Theatre at Merstham Park School
We are calling for the development of a dedicated theatre at Merstham Park School to support students, staff, and the wider local community.
Merstham Park School has a strong and growing performing arts culture. Our recent production of Matilda in 2024, followed by Annie in 2025, showed how much talent, commitment, and enthusiasm our students have. These productions were highly successful and brought together students, families, and local residents, but they were limited by the lack of a proper theatre space.
Across the UK, studies show that students who take part in drama and performing arts are more likely to develop confidence, communication skills, and teamwork. Arts participation has also been linked to improved attendance and engagement in school. Many former students from schools with strong theatre programmes report that performing helped them overcome shyness, build self-belief, and feel more connected to their school community. Schools with dedicated performance spaces are also more able to host high-quality productions and community events safely and efficiently.
A purpose-built theatre would provide a safe, professional environment for drama, music, dance, and assemblies. It would allow students to develop confidence, teamwork, communication skills, and creativity; skills that are valuable for both future careers and everyday life. It would also give more students the chance to take part in performances, whether on stage or behind the scenes.
The theatre would benefit the wider community as well. It could be used for local performances, workshops, events, and meetings, strengthening the relationship between the school and the community. It would create a shared cultural space that local residents can enjoy and take pride in.
By supporting this petition, you are helping to invest in young people, creativity, and community spirit. A theatre at Merstham Park School would be a lasting benefit for students now and for future generations.
