Get JMPD deployed and Gauteng Department of roads to speed up repairs on Hendrik Potgieter
The Issue
Since the support structures have collapsed on a section of Hendrik Potgieter (M47) in mid-December 2022 due to seasonal rains, the road has been blocked off and all metropolitan traffic is being diverted through one single backroad.
This is impacting the majority of people' livelihoods being those living alongside the diversion route which is not built to handle metropolitan traffic loads and trucks passing through, as well as daily commuters having to use the road. Trucks are making the problem worse as they are severely damaging the intersections and roads passing through while also causing huge traffic jams, even moreso during peak traffic times.
1. Getting Metro Police officers to be stationed at the diversion points and diverting trucks to Beyers Naude (M5) for traveling will lessen the load on traffic for daily commuters and ease the congestion to an extent.
2. Getting Gauteng Department of Roads Agency to act swiftly in repairs of the damaged bridge will assist everyone, and traffic to return to normal.
Now is the time to act as it will leave lasting damage if unattended on the immediate surrounding neighbourhood which will also not be fixed anytime soon. People’ livelihoods and sense of peace is being impacted.
