Get Gunnar Morling to do 1 Billion Row Challenge in 2025
The Issue
In January of 2024, Gunnar Morling created (video interview) the 1 Billion Row Challenge. Originally, it was just for Java, but the project became a hit and expanded to other languages. The project has the key elements of an easy-to-understand set of rules that lend themselves well to optimization.
I talked to Gunnar, who said he won't do it again in 2025. He said it would be a repeat of last year and that the project is time-intensive. If we don't convince him, the project won't happen again for a while.
We need people to show Gunnar that they want to repeat the competition. Just repeating the same rules may not be as enjoyable. I agree and brought up the Micromouse competition as an example of a competition that has maintained the same rules, but innovations in the space, such as using fans for handling higher G forces, allowed for more diversity of solutions.
We need people to:
- Show interest in doing another competition
- Help run the competition, such as automating the submission and tests, administration, reviewing code submissions, and offering hardware resources.
- Come up with ideas for new rules or categories of competition. Examples: arbitrarily low memory, super high cardinality, or GPU processing. Update with new ideas: Streaming, probabilistic results.
Will you join in showing your support to get Gunnar Morling to do another 1 Billion Row Competition?
