Introduce Falconry classes to Georgia Southern University

The Issue

The goal of this petition is to introduce an Introduction to Falconry class in the Recreation program at Georgia Southern University. For those who don't know, Falconry is a sport in which people hunt using birds of prey. They release the falcon or hawk, and it hunts and brings back the prey. It is a mutualistic symbiotic relationship where the bird gets healthcare and ensured food, while the person gets to admire and work with these beautiful animals. Personally, I am a student at Georgia Southern University, and I have a big interest in falconry and would like to take a class on it. This will allow students to take a class on the basic concepts needed for a falconry license. The class would involve learning what veterinary care is needed, how and what to feed them, how to make sure they get proper exercise, how to train them, and various other things important to keeping a bird of prey healthy and happy. A bird of prey is NOT necessary to learn these techniques, so it shouldn’t cost any more than other classes. All that would be taught is information that is contained in a test that is a prerequisite for earning a falconry permit. Although there may not be a very large student body interested in such a class, those that are interested should have the opportunity to take a class on one of their interests. Anyone can help this petition become successful.

I want to thank all of those interested in falconry. I think having a class is an intriguing idea. I am going to suggest that you contact Steve Hein. He is the executive director of the university's Wildlife Center and a Master Falconer. I am sure he would be a great resource in your effort to learn about the ancient art of falconry.
