Keep our Mortdale Village free from Mega Storey Developments !
The issue
Council is selling us short again. After approving other high-rise developments around our area which the community did not want on Ellen Subway and Railway Parade, it is now considering a 12-storey apartment block on the Mortdale RSL site.
The Mortdale RSL Club is using it’s good name to thrust and dominate our pleasant suburb with a 12-storey mega-structure, which will be 45 metres high. In March 2021, council staff ( but not the councillors) rejected the proposal because 12-storey buildings just aren't allowed in the area, and council's planning panel agreed with them.
Despite that, councillors decided last month to discuss the proposal at a "secret workshop" with the Mortdale RSL, which the public won't be allowed to attend. So if both the town planners and planning panel rejected it, why is Council negotiating with the Mortdale RSL behind closed doors? What’s in it for Council? Is Council eyeing off easy money or 'cash contributions'?
Is it deceptive to consult the community for a masterplan only to ignore it behind closed doors? Where is the transparency? Why are they trying to rush this through?
Let us not forget about the past compulsory acquisition of the elderly home in Mortdale, that was again discussed behind closed doors? What is the plan for this?
This mega-structure will destroy Mortdale's village atmosphere. We are sick of overdevelopment of selling off our community.
We challenge the council to stop talking to the Mortdale RSL behind closed doors, and to include the proposal in the Mortdale masterplan (which is currently being prepared) and to make no decisions on this until after the public has had a say about increasing overdevelopment at the September elections.
Please sign this petition to stop Georges River Council turning Mortdale into another Hurstville. Christina Jamieson
