George Monbiot, please reconsider your views on regenerative grazing.
The Issue
Dear George Monbiot
Farmers who have transitioned from conventional grazing to Holistic Management and Planned Grazing, a technique developed by Zimbabwean wildlife biologist Allan Savory, report greatly increased carbon storage. This method is an essential solution for mitigating flooding, providing food security, restores wildlife habitat, improves bio nutrient density, eases international tensions. Here is a compendium of peer review research citing the effectiveness of regenerative grazing. I also recommend you read Cows Save the Planet and Other Improbable Ways of Restoring Soil Health to Heal the Earth by Judith D. Schwartz, which addresses any concerns you might have.

The recent announcement of Microsoft’s purchase of carbon credits from a cattle operation in Australia that uses “holistic cattle grazing management” is but the latest example of wider acceptance of Allan Savory’s work. Many conservation organizations and companies have adopted Savory’s approach, as highlighted in the example below. Detractors of Savory may yet not realize it, but the cow is already out of the barn, as it were. “To me, Allan [Savory]’s results are spectacular. Despite recent drought, [Holistic Planned Grazing] has transformed this ranch from desert to rich grassland. Today, the grass holds the water, and streams that were dry for decades are flowing again ... it could be the best thing, the absolute best thing, conservation has ever discovered.“ - M. Sanjayan, PhD, CEO of Conservation International and former lead scientist of The Nature Conservancy, calls Allan Savory's Holistic Planned Grazing "Spectacular" (2015, 2 mins.)
The National Audubon Society created its Conservation Ranching program in response to steep declines in grassland bird populations. What in the World is Conservation Ranching? Your guide to Audubon's program to make cattle ranching prairie- and bird-friendly October 2, 2017
“A healthy beef industry is an important conservation partner, and with their support, enables us to conserve what’s left of Canada’s grasslands,” said the letter from groups such as Ducks Unlimited, Birds Canada and the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Canadian Conservation groups rally behind beef sector June 16, 2020
“WWF-Australia works with innovative beef producers to develop, trial and validate improved livestock and pasture management that can deliver significant economic, social and environmental gains. Our major objectives are to reduce sediment in stormwater run-off from farms and improve water quality in the catchments feeding into the Great Barrier Reef lagoon, while also conserving habitat for wildlife on farmland.” Project Pioneer - WWF-Australia September 2020 http://bitly.ws/duKB “The results of this study show a potential win-win situation for the Pantanal and Cerrado’s ranches and wildlife,” said the study’s lead author, Donald Parsons Eaton of the Wildlife Conservation Society. “Using rotational grazing techniques will produce healthier cattle for ranchers and help safeguard wildlife that call home to this incredibly biodiverse region.” Grazing as a Conservation Tool May 3, 2011
“When nothing else worked to restore a heavily disturbed arid pipeline corridor & oilfields, 1500 mob-stocked goats removed weeds and established perennial grasslands and sage.” Goat Green – Wyoming Oilfield Restoration with Bureau of Land Management (BLM) & Chevron http://bitly.ws/duKH Heifer International Announces Partnership with Savory Institute http://bitly.ws/duKI Adaptive or holistic grazing and feeding cows a mix of crops improves the health of the animals and also contributes to resilience of the entire ecosystem.” – General Mills From the ground up: Regenerative agriculture revives farmland while curbing climate change http://bitly.ws/duKJ “Apple is funding tests of a different approach, led by Conservation International with work on the ground from local partners including the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust and the Big Life Foundation. Instead of focusing on planting, the team will test social interventions. For example, they might help Maasai herders shift to rotational grazing, which could help degraded areas of rangeland recover.” Apple is restoring African grasslands to curb climate change
Ranchers and farmers who use regenerative grazing practices manage their cattle in a way that mimics the natural movement of herd animals. Such grazing allows for more rest and re-growth of grasses, which can lead to better food for livestock and healthier soil, as these grasses pull carbon out of the atmosphere and store it in the ground.” Timberland Announces Move to Source Leather from Regenerative Ranches http://bitly.ws/duKP “Regenerative grazing, otherwise known as rotational grazing or Adaptive Multi Paddock (AMP)
We ask that you reconsider your views on this matter. For as the earth continues to warm and the crisis worsens we need regenerative grazing to restore the 2/3 of the world's ice free land turning to desert. Your approval of these methods would be most helpful for advancing this groundbreaking field which will improve the lives of billions of people in the years to come.
