In a shocking incident, an army officer killed three stray dogs and injured two in Dehradun causing fury among animal lovers. Following which an investigation and an Army court of inquiry are looking into the charges which happened at the Garhi Cantonment area. The incident has led to a major controversy among defense personnel and civilians with animal lovers urging Army chief Bipin Rawat to act on the issue. As per reports, Major Manish Thapa of the Intelligence Corps was out for a walk he came across a Lieutenant Colonel feeding on stray dogs on the street. After an argument the colonel, he chased and hit the dogs with an iron rod killing three of them and leaving two injured. A FIR in this matter was lodged on May 12 with the Garhi Cantonment police station by an animals rights activist.
One of the witnesses, told TOI, “At around 11 pm, we heard dogs yelping in pain. We rushed outside and saw the officer chasing and beating the dogs with a rod. We tried to stop the attack but by the time we found them, three dogs were dead. The officer then managed to dispose of the dogs. A fourth dog was unconscious while a fifth was injured.” The person also said that the Major was annoyed that the stray dogs barked at his pet. The animal rights activist claimed, “Instead, the officer tried to justify it by saying he had done it in self-defense.” As per reports, Garhi cantonment police station in-charge Shankar Singh Bisht said the statement of the office has not been taken yet as he is on leave. After public resentment increased, a petition with over 2,000 signatures has been posted on social networking site Facebook asking the Army chief to take due action against the officer.
