Ban Helium Balloons on the Gold Coast

The issue

Yesterday morning I was down at the beach and I noticed that Sunrise was filming a segment of their show. They set up with lights, a camera crew and a tent to give out helium balloons. Whilst I was down there I watched multiple balloons fly off and quite a few of them landed in the ocean. My sister and I went down and picked them up, there were also a few surfers who grabbed the ones that drifted out to them. I also spoke to the people giving away the balloons but they refused to stop giving them out.

  • I would like to ask that Sunrise, Channel 7 and other businesses stop giving away helium balloons as promotions, the only thing it promotes is the death of marine life.
  • I would also like to ask that the Gold Coast City Council bans the release of helium balloons on the Gold Coast. This includes stopping people from giving them out at public and private events.

The Sunshine Coast changed their laws in 2011 and banned the release of helium balloons, why can't we do the same?

The Gold Coast has so many amazing beaches and our marine life is very special to us all. It makes me sad to see people contribute to its destruction, even if they are just passing through like Sunrise and the Channel 7 team.
