Keep "Health" Education in our Schools

The Issue

The Connecticut State Legislator has proposed a bill S.B. 378 (Raised) An Act Concerning the Recommendation of the High School Graduation Requirements Task Force. The bill proposes to remove the .5 health credit requirement from high school graduation.

Connecticut, along with the country as a whole, is in crisis. We have rising numbers of people suffering from obesity, addiction and mental health issues. That is why health education in school is so important. Removing health education from high school graduation requirements increases the risk to our children. The goal of education is to give them the skills they need to lead a productive and successful life. If we fail to teach them these skills we are increasing their likely hood for failure.

Health education builds students' knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes about health. It teaches students about physical, mental, emotional and social health and motivates students to improve and maintain their health, prevent disease, and reduce risky behaviors. Health education provides instruction that helps students learn skills they will use to make healthy choices throughout their lifetime. It results in a reduction in risky behaviors around sexuality, addictive substance use while simultaneously increasing students positive views towards nutrition, family life, physical activity, emotional and mental health.

Please sign this petition to tell our state legislators that Health Education is important to us and our kids. Tell them to keep health education in our schools.
