Disclose algorithm used to downgrade 2020 A-Level grades

The Issue

The algorithm used to standardise the 2020 A-Level results has downgraded approximately 35% of grades.

There is a growing concern that the standardisation process is disproportionately downgrading students from historically poorer performing institutions, more likely situated in disadvantaged areas of England.

There is a risk that one of the key tenets of this country, that individuals have equal opportunity to succeed and prosper is being subverted. It is also likely that bright and hardworking students from disadvantaged backgrounds have been downgraded and blocked from entering higher education. These could be our future doctors, lawyers, engineers etc!

All students, regardless of background, deserve to know how their final grades were calculated.

We ask the Department for Education to disclose in full the algorithm used for the 2020 A-Level grade standardisation and that an independent inquiry is launched.
