Petition Update: 21 Years of Transformation and Leadership
I am Oscar Marinero. For the past 21.5 years, I have been serving a Life Without the Chance of Parole sentence. At the age of 19, my actions led to the loss of a life—a tragedy I am profoundly contrite for and for which I assume full liability. I have lived with the weight of that reality every day of my adult life.
The man I am today, now 41 years old, is a far cry from the 19-year-old who first entered this system. My two decades behind bars have been defined by a total rejection of my past lifestyle and an unwavering commitment to rehabilitation and education.
From Student to Community Educator
While I continue to pursue my own academic goals—sitting just six classes away from my AA in Arts and Humanities—my focus has shifted toward helping others change their lives. I have authored and published my own curriculum, "Band of Brothers: Raising the Ruins." This is more than just a book to me; it is a mission.
I am currently teaching this curriculum to 18 fellow inmates, leading them through the difficult work of self-reflection and growth. By showing others how to rebuild from the "ruins" of their past, I am working to create a safer, more positive environment even within these walls.
A Life Dedicated to Service
In addition to my own curriculum, I continue to serve as a mentor in the Peer Literacy Mentor Program, guiding others toward their GEDs. Whether through the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, AA, or my faith, I have spent these 21.5 years proving that I am dedicated to being a man of integrity and service.
The Heart of the Matter: Family
My deepest motivation is to make my family whole. As a father, I have stayed present in my daughter’s life through every letter and phone call, urging her to excel in her life goals. However, a daughter needs her father there for the moments that matter—to watch her graduate, to support her dreams, and to be the positive male role model she deserves.
I have a job waiting for me, the enduring love of my family, and over two decades of proven transformation. I am asking for the opportunity to show the Governor and the board that I am not the person I was at 19, but a man who has earned his place back in society through nearly 22 years of work, regret, and redemption.
Thank you for taking the time to hear my story and for your continued support.
