Dear Friends,
I hope this message finds you well in your universe.
I am deeply grateful to share that the, "Gio Initiative" and my film: "We Were Here" have received the support of the incredible Kevin Hines—a passionate and powerful suicide prevention advocate, speaker, filmmaker and author. Not only has Kevin endorsed our mission, but he has also invited me onto his podcast, Hinesights, to amplify our message (streaming at the end of this month).
Kevin shared these words:
"My new friend Robert Manganelli needs your help, and it will only take 5 or so minutes. We are asking you to review and sign this incredibly important petition to reduce suicides on college campuses and beyond. The 'Gio Initiative' calls for all colleges to meet the mental health needs of their students. If you could add your name, it would mean the world to a grieving father and a filmmaker I hold in high regard.”
Tragically, yet another devastating loss has occurred at Gallaudet University, once again proving that the systemic failures that led to Gio’s passing are still happening. Gallaudet was literally voted the most dangerous university in the United States. And now, another family is facing the unimaginable.
The same Department of Public Safety (DPS) that falsely arrested Gio—while he was alone in his dorm room, still emailing his RA for help—burst through his door without cause, triggering the very mental health crisis they should have prevented. Now, that same DPS, operating under a suspended license, has failed yet again—this time, by neglecting to provide critical medical assistance to another student, resulting in yet another tragic loss.
This is not just negligence—it is a systemic failure that continues to cost lives.
The grieving family has reached out to me for help, and I am giving them every ounce of my energy. This is exactly why we must keep pushing forward.
Our goal is to reach 10,000 signatures, and we need more voices to make an impact. You are the advocates who have already signed, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you could continue to share the petition and spread the word, it would mean the world. Every name added brings us closer to real change.
With deep gratitude,
Robert Manganelli.
