Gahanna Need to Take Action on Bullying and Other Violence Occurring In Their Schools.

The Issue

I am a student in Gahanna, Ohio, and have witnessed firsthand the numerous and heartbreaking issues that plague our community, especially within the education system. At the Gahanna Middle Schools, I have experienced persistent bullying that began in the 2nd grade. The school administration, which should be a beacon of support and protection, has consistently failed to address this damaging problem. The situation became so dire that I felt the only escape was to take drastic measures against myself. Thankfully, I found my voice and decided to speak up, not only for myself but for countless others who suffer in silence under similar circumstances.

Bullying, sexual assault, domestic violence, and inadequate educational measures are not just personal issues—they are community issues that demand immediate and comprehensive action. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, nearly one in five students report being bullied. The effects are devastating, leading to decreased academic performance, mental health struggles, and in severe cases, suicidal thoughts. However, bullying is just one aspect of a broader issue.

Sexual assault remains an alarming problem across educational institutions. National statistics show that every 68 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted, and this grim reality extends to school environments where reporting is often hindered by fear and shame. Domestic violence statistics are equally shocking, with one in four women and one in nine men being victims of severe intimate partner violence in the U.S.

Education is the foundation of progress and it’s imperative that schools in Gahanna not only educate but also create a safe and supportive environment for every student. To achieve this, we must tighten laws and policies related to bullying, sexual assault, and domestic violence. By implementing stricter regulations, comprehensive support systems, and proactive educational programs, we can create an environment where students feel safe, heard, and valued.

Therefore, I urge the Gahanna City Council, school administrations, and policymakers to take decisive action. We need stronger anti-bullying policies, more educational resources dedicated to awareness and prevention, and more robust support systems for victims. Join me in this crucial fight to make our schools and community safer for everyone. Sign this petition to let our leaders know that we demand change now.
