Fund Veterans to Protect Schools

Fund Veterans to Protect Schools

The Issue

Synopsis: Requesting State funding to hire and provide trained, skilled veterans to be posted at all Public Schools and preferably Private Schools as well.

In the heartbreaking wake of yet another school shooting with innocent lives being lost, I am reaching out to provide a bipartisan solution. This idea solely focuses on serving the underserved members of society and provides a solution to protect our youth & support our veterans.

In the United States, there are about 19 million veterans. The current unemployment rate for veterans is 2.5%. https://www.dol.gov/agencies/vets/latest-numbers.

That is roughly 475,000 unemployed veterans.  Even if we generously cut that number in half to account for Veterans who are unable to work or those who are retired, that would still leave 237,500 veterans needing an occupation.

In the United States, there are 90,148 Public Schools according to https://www.weareteachers.com This means even by cutting the available veteran population in half, we would be able to provide at least 2 trained veterans per public school.

Ideally, I would like to see this program funded on a State level. Meaning this position would have a government salary, state benefits, summers off, holidays off, Etc.

What obstacles I foresee this movement having:

Potential Issue #1: Many Veterans experience high levels of trauma.

Solution #1: Require Psychiatric evaluations as a part of the hiring process.

Potential Issue #2: Parents are uncomfortable that there is an armed person(s) at the school daily.

Solution #2: In the worst high-pressure situations, they are trained & skilled to de-escalate a situation first before using deadly force.

Potential Issue #3: Individuals not being able to get past this being a Gun Issue Vs. Mental Health Issue. Thus preventing any actual change.

Solution #3: While we all would prefer to live in a world where we do not have to worry about these problems. The fact at hand is the lawmakers have argued way too long and have provided ZERO bipartisan solutions. It is time good people force lawmakers to make the changes necessary to prevent and discourage these heinous crimes.
