Fund UFIT program for Marina Del Rey Middle School
The Issue
Dear LAUSD Representatives,
We are reaching out with immediate and urgent concern over the absence of funding for the UFIT (Unified Fitness Integration Technique) program at Marina Del Rey Middle School this year.
Last year, UFIT had an immensely positive and transformative impact on our students, and it is vital for their continued growth and development. Several UFIT coaches led our students in dance, cheer, and team sports. To witness the enthusiasm of students freely engaging in physical activity, fostering both health and discipline, was truly a testament to its success. It empowered students who might not otherwise participate in physical education or sports, thus promoting inclusivity and teamwork.
Our school community was told UFIT would return to Marina this year. That commitment was withdrawn by the district at a time that left the school no opportunity to plan or fund comparable programming of its own. Our students returned in August expecting the activities they had thrived in, and found that those activities were no longer offered, with nothing in their place.
Marina Del Rey Middle School is a Title I school serving a racially and socioeconomically diverse community, and for many of our families, school is where enrichment happens. There is no private program filling that gap for them outside of school. Our students deserve the same access to high quality physical education as students elsewhere in the district. This budget-driven decision should not land hardest on the children with the least cushion to absorb it.
Studies have shown that physically active children tend to perform better academically and socially. They exhibit improved concentration, better classroom behavior, and are likely to enjoy greater overall well-being.
We ask that Los Angeles Unified School District reinstate funding for UFIT at Marina Del Rey Middle School immediately. By doing so, you will be investing in the holistic development of our students, preparing them for both academic and personal success. Allocating budget resources to UFIT is a direct investment in our future, supporting a balanced education that addresses both the mind and body.
