The Issue
As a progressing skater in San Antonio, I've faced a significant challenge that many others in San Antonio share. I love skateboarding, but with no driver's license yet, the nearest skate park is an hour away. Not only is the distance a struggle, it is that not all of the parks are skater friendly and can be dangerous to skate . This isn't just my story; countless skaters in San Antonio share this frustration. Our city, which prides itself on being inclusive and community focused, needs to offer better support for its skaters.
Skateboarding is more than just a hobby; it's a way to express individuality and is a sport that fosters creativity, fitness, and community spirit. Unfortunately, we lack safe and accessible spaces where skaters can grow their skills and build connections. City officials' decision to construct safe, modern skate parks in every district would not only cater to the current enthusiasts but also encourage young skaters to pick up their boards, promoting a healthy lifestyle and positive community engagement.
San Antonio City Council must take action in investing in new and improved skate parks city-wide. With a population over 1.5 million, including thousands of skaters from diverse backgrounds, it's crucial that our city's planning and budget reflect our needs. By putting funds towards building accessible, modern skate parks in each district, we will ensure that every corner of San Antonio provides a safe space for skaters.
In communities nationwide, cities invested in skate parks have seen enhanced community interaction, a boost in local economy as families gather, and improved mental health, which is a big plus side to the sport among users. San Antonio is no stranger to these challenges, and by introducing more skate parks, reducing such issues within our city.
It’s time for the San Antonio City Council to listen and make skating accessible, safe, and inclusive for everyone. Join me in urging our city leaders to fund new skate parks so all skaters, beginners, and experts , can have the space they need to thrive in every district of our growing city. Sign this petition and help transform San Antonio into a welcoming place for skaters like me.
