Fund 24/7 community end of life care teams in Gloucestershire
The Issue
My father, a resident of Innsworth, was one of many patients who hoped to spend his final days in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by family and familiar surroundings. Like many families, we envisioned a dignified and peaceful end supported by an efficient, coordinated, and responsive healthcare system that could provide all necessary care. Sadly, our experience was far from this ideal.
The lack of 24/7 community end-of-life care teams means that families like mine often face heart-wrenching challenges. The absence of round-the-clock response times, seamless coordination between health services, and consistent support can lead to unnecessary hospital admissions or prolonged suffering at home. It is time for us to address this critical shortcoming in Gloucestershire's healthcare system.
Research illustrates that patients who receive end-of-life care in their preferred setting have improved quality of life and better emotional well-being. According to a study by Public Health England, patients who receive home-based end-of-life care report higher satisfaction and express diminished anxiety, leading to a more peaceful and dignified passing.
Gloucestershire's NHS must prioritize funding and structuring 24/7 community end-of-life care teams. These specialized teams could ensure that terminally ill patients and their families receive the comfort, dignity, and support they deserve. With an aging population and an increasing demand for personalized patient care, the need for such services has never been more urgent.
Implementing an around-the-clock palliative care system is achievable with the right resources and strategy. By reallocating existing resources, harnessing community healthcare providers, and investing in training for dedicated end-of-life professionals, the NHS can craft a more compassionate and efficient service. This system will ensure no family faces the struggle ours did when balancing care needs at the most critical moments.
Let us rally together to advocate for a change in Gloucestershire’s healthcare services. We can ensure the wishes and needs of patients nearing the end of their lives are met. Please sign this petition, urging NHS Gloucestershire to secure the necessary funding and commitment to establishing 24/7 community end-of-life care teams. Your signature can help transform the end-of-life care experience for many families in our community.
