The Issue

For decades, the region of North East Sri Lanka has been hard to access for international travellers, significantly impacting families and the lives of countless others. Despite its rich cultural heritage and bountiful resources, this area has been isolated due to the lack of direct international flights to Jaffna. This inaccessibility has kept potential business opportunities, tourists, and international aid at bay, slowing down the economic revival of a region that has already suffered too much, since decades of civil war, which ended in 2009.

The people of North East Sri Lanka, are eager for development, growth, and a chance to showcase the beauty and potential this region holds. Direct international flights to Jaffna would not only facilitate easier travel for the Srilankan community and the international visitors but also invigorate the local economy by promoting tourism and opening avenues for trade and industry. It would help connect Jaffna to the world, allowing businesses to flourish and creating jobs for local communities.

The lack of easy access has also posed a challenge in obtaining international aid and assistance, which are crucial for the region's sustainable development. With direct flights, we can encourage not just economic investment but also educational and cultural exchanges that would benefit the entire region.

For many years, the North East region of Sri Lanka has been overlooked, its potential stifled by limited accessibility. As someone deeply connected to this vibrant part of the world, I've witnessed firsthand how the lack of direct international flights to Jaffna curtails economic opportunities and hinders the lives of those who reside there. This region, rich in culture and heritage, is home to thousands yearning for easier connections to the wider world.

Currently, the complexity involved in reaching this part of Sri Lanka affects hundreds of thousands of travellers each year. These logistical challenges not only strain personal travel plans but also significantly restrict trade, tourism, and investment—a crucial catalyst for economic growth. The people of Jaffna and the wider North East region have endured decades of unrest, and now more than ever, they require access to viable opportunities that promote regeneration, growth, and sustainability.

Data from the past decade reveals that regions with good connectivity experience a considerable uptick in GDP. For instance, according to a report by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, improving air connectivity in similar regions has resulted in economic growth of up to 4% annually. The North East region's potential for similar success is undeniable if given the chance to connect globally.

Granting Jaffna international flight access will not only bolster the economy by inviting global business investments but will also stimulate tourism, showcasing the region’s untapped potential. Tourists will flock to witness its pristine coastlines and cultural landmarks, invigorating local businesses and generating much-needed employment opportunities.

Significantly, having direct international flights could turn Jaffna into a regional hub, attracting not only tourists but also multinational companies and investors focused on tapping into the unique opportunities available here. According to recent economic assessments, regions with better international connectivity see a substantial increase in GDP, and Jaffna could greatly benefit from such a surge.

Upgrading Jaffna Airport to a fully international hub is the key to North-East recovery and nationwide prosperity. Global policymakers and leaders can drive sustainable economic growth and boost Sri Lanka’s GDP through this critical infrastructure expansion.

We call upon the Sri Lankan government, aviation authorities, and international airline companies to recognise this critical need and act swiftly to establish international flights to Jaffna. Doing so will forge new paths for development, cohesion, and prosperity for this beautiful region.

Let's come together—the local community, the government, and concerned individuals worldwide—to advocate for this necessary change. By signing this petition, you are supporting the dawn of a new era for the North East region of Sri Lanka. Please sign and help us connect Jaffna to the world.

By signing this petition, you are not just supporting the initiation of direct international flights to Jaffna but also promoting a vision of a thriving, prosperous, and interconnected North East Sri Lanka. We urge the Sri Lankan government, international airlines, and global communities to consider the long-term benefits that such an initiative would bring. Please sign our petition to help us make the dream of a revitalized Jaffna a reality. Together, we can pave the way for an era of renewed hope and growth for this vibrant region.
