I am a concerned parent and community member of Highview Elementary School in the Crestwood School District, Dearborn Heights.

Our children spend most of their day at school, and their health and safety should always be a top priority. There have been multiple medical incidents at Highview Elementary School where students required immediate attention, and a full-time, on-site school nurse was not available.

These repeated incidents clearly show that the current situation is not sufficient to meet students’ medical needs. Children experience injuries, allergic reactions, asthma attacks, and other health emergencies without warning. When these situations occur, every minute matters.

A full-time school nurse would:

Respond immediately to medical emergencies
Care for students with chronic conditions such as asthma, allergies, diabetes, and seizures
Safely administer medications
Reduce unnecessary emergency calls and early dismissals
Support school staff so teachers can focus on education
Provide parents peace of mind knowing their children are safe

Relying on a part-time or shared nurse is no longer enough. The multiple incidents that have already occurred make it clear that Highview Elementary needs a nurse on campus every school day.

We respectfully urge the Crestwood School District administration and school board to prioritize student health and approve funding for a full-time school nurse at Highview Elementary School.
