Fulfill the barbecue promise to Charter Oak students

Fulfill the barbecue promise to Charter Oak students
The Issue
Dear fellow Charter Oak High School students, parents, and community members,
I am reaching out to you today with a sense of both hope and frustration. Hope that together we can make our voices heard, and frustration that, like so many of you, I feel we have been let down. Our school made a promise—a promise that if we worked hard and excelled on our state testing, we would be rewarded with a celebratory barbecue. Many of us embraced this challenge wholeheartedly, dedicating countless hours to studying, preparing, and pushing ourselves to achieve our best. We were motivated not only by personal growth but by the simple joy of knowing our efforts would be recognized. Yet, despite our hard work, the promised barbecue has not materialized.
As a student at Charter Oak High School, this feels deeply disheartening. We are taught from a young age that keeping your word is fundamental to trust, integrity, and community. Yet here we are, left waiting for a commitment that has not been honored. The anticipation, the whispered excitement in hallways, the visions of laughter-filled afternoons with friends over burgers and lemonade—all of that has been delayed, leaving a lingering sense of disappointment.
This is more than just a missed event. The promise of a barbecue was a symbol of recognition—a tangible acknowledgment of our perseverance, our late nights of studying, and our determination to excel. It was a small but meaningful gesture that told us, “We see your effort. We value your commitment.” Research shows that celebrating achievement can increase academic motivation by 20–30%, reinforcing the idea that hard work leads to tangible rewards. By not following through, the trust between students and administration risks being weakened, and the simple power of encouragement is diminished.
We, the students and members of this community, urge the administration of Charter Oak High School to honor their commitment and organize the promised barbecue without further delay. This isn’t just about food or a fun gathering—it’s about integrity, respect, and the value of honoring one’s word. It’s about showing that the hard work, late nights, and sacrifices of your students do not go unnoticed.
We ask for clear communication about when the barbecue will take place, so we can celebrate together and feel the pride and camaraderie that comes from being recognized for our efforts. Let’s restore the trust that is so essential in any thriving school community and ensure that students feel motivated, respected, and appreciated.
Please sign this petition to call on our school to fulfill its promise. Let’s come together as students, parents, and community members to ensure that our voices are heard and that the dedication of our students is honored in the way it deserves.
