Free Rob Lawrie

The Issue

Volunteer aid worker Rob Lawrie, faces 5 years in prison for trying to save a 4 year old girl who had been living in "the Jungle" at Calais -- a horrible place where thousands of refugees and migrants who wanted to get to England have been left struggling to survive.

I couldn't bare to see the poor living conditions in "the Jungle". It impacted on millions of people, including Leeds resident Rob Lawrie. A local support group was launched for people living in Calais.

Rob regularly made trips up to Calais in order to drop off donations of food and clothes that had been collected, as well as to help people living there build pallet shacks. I always admired his dedication.

One day, in the Jungle, Rob met a small 4 year old girl, Bahar. Her father begged Rob to take his daughter with him and reunite her with their family, who had been living in Leeds for 10 years. Concerned with how she would cope with the terrible conditions of the Jungle, Rob did everything he could to reunite the little girl with her family. But in his attempt Rob was arrested at customs and is now being pursued by the French Justice system.

After being arrested at border control, Rob spent 5 days in police custody. He is now on bail pending trial on the 14th of January. He is accused of "illegal immigration assistance" and under French Law, he faces up to five years in prison.

Yes Rob broke the law but does he really deserve to go to jail for such a long time for demonstrating some humanity?

Join me in asking the French courts to drop the charges against Rob Lawrie and for the UK Government to intervene on this case.
