The Issue

To the Officials of Nassau County,

We, the undersigned residents and perturbed community members, respectfully petition for the legalization and regulation of electric bicycles (e-bikes) for use by Nassau County residents, particularly concerning eligible youth.

E-bikes are an eco-friendly, efficient, and pragmatic form of transportation, while also being significantly cheaper in both power and cost compared to cars, and being faster than an average pedal bike. Permitting teens to operate e-bikes legally would provide meaningful benefits to individuals, families, and the broader Nassau County community.

E-bikes offer a safe transportation option when supported by clear regulations, including helmet requirements, speed limits, designated riding areas, and traffic safety education, all of which help build public trust and ensure rider safety. They also help reduce reliance on gas-powered vehicles, lowering emissions and contributing to improved air quality and a healthier environment. In addition, expanded access to e-bikes can reduce short-distance car trips, easing traffic congestion and decreasing parking demand in busy areas such as schools, business districts, and public spaces.

Beyond transportation benefits, e-bikes promote independence and responsibility by encouraging riders to follow traffic laws and safety guidelines, fostering accountable habits that prepare young people for adulthood. Many neighboring regions have already adopted regulated e-bike policies for riders aged 15 and older, and Nassau County has the opportunity to modernize its transportation approach in alignment with these evolving standards.

E-biking also supports mental health and overall well-being by reducing stress, improving mood, and encouraging outdoor activity. The pedal-assist feature makes cycling accessible to a wider range of individuals, promoting regular exercise that benefits both physical and cognitive health, including better sleep, focus, and memory. In addition, group rides and community use help reduce isolation and strengthen social connections, contributing to healthier and more engaged communities.

Many people are concerned about the safety of these riders; however, our goal is not to replace cars with them but to provide short-distance transport on roads with lower speed limits, while also opening up new opportunities for many individuals who either don't have cars or don't have available transportation throughout the entire day.

Supporting safe and legal e-bike use is an investment in a cleaner, safer, and more connected Nassau County.

Proposed Guidelines
We suggest a framework that includes a minimum rider age based on e-bike class, mandatory helmet use for riders under 18 (recommended for all), speed limits by classification, roadway restrictions where necessary, and required safety education for younger users.

Conclusion
We urge Nassau County officials to consider this proposal and adopt a structured regulatory system that ensures safe, responsible, and beneficial e-bike use for all residents.

(In today's society, our Nassau County youth have developed a sense of distress due to the presence of police officers, due to aggressive legal restrictions on e-bikes.)
