The Issue

I am reaching out to highlight a crucial step needed in improving the lives of individuals with disabilities across New York State. This is personal to me and being just a dad with a son who is a non-speaking autistic individual, I believe every individual should have the autonomy to select their preferred method of communication. Currently, NYS bill S7792b/A7363 (Communication Bill of Rights for Individuals with Disabilities) is sitting in the Committee on People with Disabilities, and bringing it to the Senate floor for a final vote could revolutionize accessibility for countless people. As well as, setting precedence across our nation and perhaps the world.

Communication is fundamental to every facet of human interaction and essential for accessing services that assure full participation in society. Individuals with disabilities must have the freedom to choose the method of communication that best suits their needs, be it spoken, written, signed, or via assistive technology. This is not just about rights; it’s about respect for diversity and the dignity of choice.

The bill has been crafted to address these needs, ensuring that all individuals are given the power to communicate in ways that are most effective for them. By adopting this bill, we are taking a step toward a more inclusive society, ensuring that everyone has equal opportunity to participate in community life, healthcare, education, and employment.

Time is of the essence in moving the bill from the committee to the Senate floor as the legislative session ends June 4th.  Please join me in urging the New York State Senate to act now. Let’s push for this bill to be moved out of the committee and onto the Senate floor. Together, we can help ensure that individuals with disabilities have the communication rights they deserve. Sign this petition to support a future where everyone’s voice can be heard and respected. And when that happens this world becomes a better place.
