Freedom of Speech

The Issue

Khalistan movement is a Sikh freedom movement to establish a sovereign state, called Khalistan for Sikh human rights as we faced a Sikh Genocide. There’s a constant violation of the freedom of speech and discrimination against our rights to practice our faith freely in India as Sikhs aren’t recognised in their constitution. Recently, the Khalistan flag got removed in school premises (Southall) as it “wasn’t allowed” on culture day, where all cultures are meant to be rightfully represented. This petition is to change this thinking of the Khalistan flag being optional. According to Article 10 of Freedom Expression, everyone has a right to have an opinion without unnecessary interferences. The Khalistan flag shouldn’t be stripped away from anyone under any circumstances as it’s not an opinion, but a movement. The school should encourage inclusivity rather than exclusion, especially when the majority of the school is from a Punjabi background and supports this movement. This makes the students feel they are not represented and not welcomed in the school that supposedly is inclusive. Therefore, the headteacher, who told the teacher to take the flag, should apologise for this disrespect and ensure it doesn’t happen again.
