Thank you for signing the petition to drop the charges against Native survivor Maddesyn George.
In response to this petition, prosecutors have doubled down on their denial that Maddesyn was raped by Kristopher Graber, using her criminal record and the fact that she took drugs and cash from Graber after the rape to discredit her victimization claim. At the same time, they have willfully ignored Graber's criminal record of violence against multiple women. As her attorney told the Intercept, "What the prosecutor is telling is a story of robbery by a drug-addicted Native woman, playing into stereotypes about substance use and Native people to undermine her claim of self-defense.”
Maddesyn, whose child is now 19 months old, accepted a plea deal after being incarcerated for more than a year, out of fear of the unknowns of a jury trial. She pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter and drug possession with intent to distribute. Now, prosecutors are recommending a punishment that significantly exceeds the sentencing guidelines for these charges: a prison term of 17 years and lifetime state supervision.
Maddesyn's sentencing hearing has been set for Wednesday, November 17. The next three weeks are crucial. Although Maddesyn has accepted a plea deal, the prosecution can still drop the charges, and that is exactly what we will continue to demand. Once she is sentenced, she will not be eligible to appeal because of the plea deal.
Please help us reach our goal of 10,000 signatures for Maddesyn by sharing this petition with friends and on social media.
