The Issue

Zia is a former interpreter who risked his life to help American soldiers in Afghanistan. Now he’s being held in a detention center — arrested by masked ICE agents during a green card appointment.

Zia (Identified only as Zia by members of Congress and his attorney out of concern for his safety and that of his family) worked alongside the U.S. military during the war. He came to the U.S. legally under humanitarian parole — the same program created to protect Afghans who served with American forces. He was doing everything by the book.

Then ICE showed up.

Without warning, Zia was seized at a government office, loaded into a van, and taken out of state. Now he’s locked up in Massachusetts, with no clear explanation.

The Department of Homeland Security says he’s under investigation for a “serious criminal allegation” — but hasn’t provided any evidence, charges, or details. His attorney says he has no criminal record.

This is not how you treat an ally. Zia stood by our troops. The U.S. government promised safety in return. We must honor that promise.

We’re calling on the Department of Homeland Security and the Trump administration to release Zia immediately and provide full transparency about the basis for his detention.

Thousands of veterans, refugees, and human rights groups are watching this case. What happens to Zia will send a message — not just to the Afghan allies we welcomed, but to the world.

Sign to say America keeps its promises. Free Zia now.
