I was having a conversation today with someone who was and remains very important to me. Because of conditions that was out of their control and absolutely out of my control, we haven't communicated in quite some time. This renewed connection led to many different thoughts, including the fact that losing contact with, (her) could have been and probably should have been devastating. However, because of what I am terming P.I.P.M or Prison induced perpetual mourning, our "disconnection" was barely a bleep on my radar. As I thought about that fact and what it exactly meant, I started looking at the other losses in my life during my incarceration. The loss that stands out most is the loss of my mother, she is the absolute love of my life, whom shall never be replaced. Next my father, a man that I admire immensely. My nephew was and remains an absolute star and his loss continues to impact my sister who is a phenomenal mother. My Grandmother and Matriarch of my family, countless cellies, associates in prison, via transfers, releases, deaths, etc. I have built multiple close friendships with people that I consider to be family and do to "prison realities", most of those friendships end abruptly and of course without consent, or consideration. As I think about this paradigm/quandary further, all prisoners are in a consistent state of loss (loss of freedom, loss of family, friends, rights, the absolute loss of dignity, loss of the ability to be correct, loss of privacy, etc) and this systemic persistent trauma is greatly impacting countless women and men, families and society as a whole. Perpetual mourning of innumerable amounts of loss. How do we quantify the residual impact of the decision to forcibly take away liberty, dignity, privacy, love, family, property, redemption, safety and then without reparations to what was intentionally destroyed, returning broken citizens to everywhere USA, including to failing violent communities and to communities near you? wearethesrc!
