Lock em up, throw away the key, life without the possibility of parole, three strikes you're out. These are some often used phrases, slogans and mantras that have described the paradigm under which criminal justice has been shaped, guided, implemented and is now enforced. As a result, America has 2.3 million people incarcerated which is 25% of the worlds entire population and is by far the highest prison population globally. America spends 100,00 per year, per prisoner. And now spends 75 billion per year on incarceration as a whole. Now this existing paradigm that has brought us to where we are today. This lock em up, eye for an eye, cowboy up, antiquated mentality that is in no way benefitting our society, is the foundation of the policy that is driving "criminal justice" in America today. Now, let us imagine a new paradigm with new possibilities, as a result of new ways of thought. Where education, mental wellness and clean living are the focus of politicians, judges and the DOC. According to the New York Times, while it costs 100,000 per year to house a prisoner, it only costs 10,000 per year to put that same person through college. Again, America has the number one global prison population yet at the same time America is only number 65 in the global college population. There are 64 countries that have a higher college population than America. Let us imagine a new paradigm with new possibilities, as a result of new ways of thought. A paradigm where politicians, judges and the DOC are determined to not allow men and women to fail. Where citizens who violate societal norms or laws are steered into trade school after paying their debt instead of probation or parole. A paradigm in which prisoners would receive the substance abuse and mental wellness treatment they desperately need. A holistic approach to healing damaged men and women and creating assets to society. Holistic healing no more lock em up, throw away the key and pretending that nothing sinister is happening.
