Famed Author Howard Zehr said that "crime represents a wound in the community, a tear in the web of relationship." If crime in oppressed communities indeed represents a wound and I assert that it absolutely does. Then mass incarceration represents an infection within that wound. An infection of ill intent, an infection of abuse, an infection of systemic oppression, that has been placed deep within the wound of oppressed communities and has exasperated exponentially the suffering of said communities. Justice, however, would be an antibiotic, an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory for the wounds that affect countless oppressed communities. Justice would bring about healing for these communities, equal funding for our schools, respect and fair treatment by law enforcement. These are basic and vital tenements of Justice. What does it even look like for oppressed communities when the "good apples" within law enforcement begin to rise up against the bad apples that are deeply entrenched in and have been sheltered by the criminal justice system? What does it even look like for oppressed communities when the good apples within the entirety of the Justice system begin to follow the lead and the examples of a man like Larry Krasner? What does it even look like for oppressed communities when the good apples of law enforcement begin to uphold their duty to intervene? When something is wrong, when something is abusive, when something is criminal officers have a duty to intervene. Those by-standing officers who stood by in Minnesota, had a duty to intervene on the behalf of George Floyd. They had a duty to protect his civil rights, they had a duty to protect the sanctity of his life and his humanity. And the oft unspoken elephant in the room is, that failure to protect, this abandonment of the duty to intervene, this proverbial knee of law enforcement on the neck of oppressed communities, happens every day all across this Nation. It happens all throughout the prison industrial complex. All across this country courtrooms have their proverbial knee in the neck of the wrongfully accused and convicted. All across this Nation law enforcement has their proverbial knee on the neck of those who conveniently fit the description. Respect, development, equity, fair treatment, that is what justice looks like to the oppressed and today we proclaim that JUSTICE IS DESIDERATUM! (Desideratum - needed or necessary!) wearethesrc!!! Part two tomorrow.
