Free Tyre James Gay – Victim of Police Misconduct, Withheld Evidence, and a Broken Justice

The Issue

My name is Tyre James Gay. I have spent nearly 15 years behind bars for a crime I did not commit — convicted on the word of a now-exposed, corrupt detective, while crucial evidence was hidden from my jury.

In 2016, I was found guilty based on the testimony and investigation of Detective Michael Hellerman, who has now been proven to have:
- Stolen evidence
- Used racial slurs and threats during interrogations
- Violated departmental policy and civil rights
- Already been involved in at least one exoneration case in Georgia

None of this was shared with my jury. None of this was disclosed to my defense. The State of Georgia allowed a corrupt officer’s word to seal my fate — and withheld everything that could have changed the outcome.

I’ve Filed Everything the Law Requires:

- A 22-page Extraordinary Motion for New Trial
- Sworn affidavits, including one from my co-defendant Jermaine Cheeks, who testified that I had nothing to do with the crime
- Internal Affairs documents exposing the lead detective
- A detailed reentry plan and proof of rehabilitation
- A supplemental motion requesting an evidentiary hearing and CIU review

The System Must Make This Right

All I’m asking for is what the Constitution guarantees:
- A fair trial
- A jury who sees all the facts
- A chance to return home to my family and rebuild my life

Join Me in Demanding Action:

I’m asking the DeKalb County Superior Court, the Conviction Integrity Unit, and the Georgia Department of Corrections to:
- Review my motion fairly and urgently
- Acknowledge the misconduct and violations of due process
- Grant me a new trial or immediate release

My name is Tyre James Gay. I’m not just a case number — I’m a man who deserves to come home.
